Tell us a little bit about you and the business that you run
I run a Sales Consultancy for Small Businesses that need advice on how to increase their sales, or wish to outsource their sales requirements to an experienced sales person, selling for them on a flexible/part time basis.
What inspired you to start your own business ?
I knew that something had to give, as my work life balance was not at all balanced. I worked all hours and saw little of my two young boys, and my partner (who was working himself to the bone and looking after the children, cooking and getting them ready for bed) was about to crack!
I loved what I did for a job and always have. After reading Dame Stephanie Shirley’s book, Let it Go, I finally had the inspiration and push I needed to go it alone.
It helped that my first contract had already been offered to me by an engineering company (my partner actually), who was desperate for more sales and to grow his company, but couldn’t afford a full time sales person.
Working part time means I can still earn a wage, doing what I love and am skilled at and also be a more present mother to my children.
What has been your biggest challenge ?
So far, my biggest challenge is the website. It’s something I need to outsource but currently I don’t have the need to whilst in a contract. I’m not good at websites and I will outsource it when I find someone reliable!
What have you learnt about yourself since you became self-employed ?
That I can’t switch off – ever!
That I’m rubbish at keeping accounts.
That I love it!
What has been the best thing about being your own boss ?
I love the freedom. I probably work even longer hours than when I was employed on PAYE (when kids have gone to bed), but my work is more flexible. I don’t feel anxious that I’ll be late or guilty about taking a day off and working at home if the kids are poorly.
If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring ‘mumpreneur’ what would it be ?
Play to your strengths, outsource your weaknesses!
Nicola Findlater runs Work Smart Selling Solutions, which offers bespoke ‘Selling Packages’ to small businesses. We lend ourselves to businesses on a flexible or part-time basis, advising and/or selling for businesses that can’t justify, or don’t have the need to employ a full-time sales person, but want to increase their sales.
