I have always found in the 20 years of being self employed that my workload has always been unpredictable. Family life can be so difficult to juggle at busier times.
To be able to deal with the fluctuating peaks and troughs I always have to be one step ahead. I always feel very guilty at the times when works encroaches our family time, but a week later I may find myself twiddling my thumbs!
It isn’t so much the day to day chores, it is the extra errands and jobs that are the challenge. Now that I work from home it does seem that I am expected to have unlimited time to do everything. This includes arranging appointments, keeping on top of finances, getting the best deals and so on.
It is getting to that time of year when my organising skill are tested to their limits: Christmas! I love it and I like to fit a lot into the holiday season, so I need to plan ahead. When the schools go back in September I start with DIY tasks, freshen chipped paint on woodwork and removing fingerprints. A little work makes everything look cleaner and is much easier to keep clean.
Next job is stocking up essentials such as toilet rolls, cleaning products and that type of thing, then I don’t need to worry about running out.
The other really big one is the Christmas shopping. Working at home does mean than I am not in town for shopping, but shopping on the internet is so convenient. The internet is also so much easier than towing children around the shops and my children never question the deliveries when they arrive. For me the biggest advantages are the choices available and I can take my time choosing, no more rushed buys that will never do as a present for anyone! I love the fact that I can really take my time to choose that perfect gift, something that means something to the recipient.

I will never be that one step ahead, but getting a few jobs done takes away a lot of stress and makes a busy time of year more enjoyable.
