Who doesn’t have a resolution or goal that they make at some time of year? We all do and of course the New Year is the most popular time for setting new resolutions. It is also the time of the year when most resolutions and goals fail, why is this and what can you do about it?
It seems that just about everyone you know has some kind of dream or goal that they want to have come true. While having lots of dreams and ambitions is a great thing it can also be distracting. Too many dreams can lead to confusion and to wasted time.
Instead of focusing on a dream, you have so many that you don’t know where to start and end up doing nothing.
This is why it is recommended that you write down your resolutions and goals for the upcoming year. To achieve your goal you will need to focus on it. This will take patience and work, possibly on a daily basis.
By writing down your resolutions and goals, and journalling your progress, you can see exactly where you are with your goal at any given time. You can see your starting point and where you are today. You will also be able to identify any problem areas and then take steps to overcome them.
It also helps to break down your main resolution into more manageable steps. This is especially important to do for any large goals such as saving for a new home or losing a lot of weight.
Studies have actually shown that those people who write down their goals and resolutions see a much higher success rate. Less than 5% of people actually write down their resolutions and goals.
You don’t have to share your written goals with anyone. It just helps to solidify them in your mind and turns a dream into something that you are actually working towards.
Each day as you make progress you will feel a sense of accomplishment. This helps to motivate you to continue and achieve more. Plus your mind sees that you are making progress and this increases your willpower. You understand that what you are doing is not a waste of time or effort.
As you write down your goals you can identify which ones you want to work on first. Decide which dream is most important and make that your number one priority. You can always start on a new goal once the first is completed.
No one says you can only set goals and resolutions over the New Year. Jump in and start whatever time of the year it is. Your goals list should be a constantly evolving document as you achieve some steps and start to work on others.
Some dreams may be just that, a dream that you know is impossible to reach at this point in time. Instead you should set a series of goals that will help you reach that lofty dream at some point.
Writing out your resolutions allows you to always keep them in sight. Of course you will make mistakes or go off in the wrong direction. What is important is that you don’t give up. When things go wrong look for the reason why and learn how to work around it. You can be assured that you will have learned from your mistakes and that you won’t make the same mistake twice.
You will develop strength and character from taking action and reaching your goals. These tools will help you improve your life experiences and you can pass on what you have learned to your children.
I use a goal setting system that allows you to break down your goals by month, week and day and to schedule each little step so you can see what you are achieving and reward yourself. You cn use the system on paper, on your computer, or on a tablet or mobile, using Evernote. To find out more about this, please take a look at my Goals and Resolutions system
