I was sent a selection of Detox products from AVogel to try out over the New Year. You can find their detox diet recommendations here.
The products I tried were Golden Rod Tea, Molkosan prebiotic and Milk Thistle complex. Reading the AVogel website, I understand that this combination (together with healthy food, water and gentle exercise) would help to detox my urinary tract, guts and liver.
The jury seems to be out on detoxing. I have many friends who swear by it, (and the AVogel site is full of testimonials) although I have also read several articles that suggest that it is just not needed and the whole notion of stored up toxins is just a myth. Up till now, I have never tried a detox, not because I am sceptical but just because I have never got around to it. So I was happy to give it a go.
Like many people over Christmas I have eaten to excess. I feel a bit bloated and figured I might be retaining water. However, unlike many people, I have just completed my second complete teetotal Christmas (and my first complete year without alcohol, after developing an allergy to it) so I wasn’t sure if my liver really needed detoxing this year, but decided to give it a try anyway.
I was recommended to drink two sachets of the Golden Rod and Knotgrass tea a day, so replaced my first and last cup of coffee of the day with them. It was quite pleasant – like many herbal teas. Then after breakfast each day, I drank the Molkosan with drops of Milk Thistle in it. I didn’t like the flavour of either of these – I tried them separately but that just prolonged the agony, so I did my best and swigged it down as fast as I could each day.
I certainly felt like I was having a bit of a clearout. I became well acquainted with the loo for a few days – weeing and pooing like crazy (sorry for sharing). So I guess that something was happening. I did try to drink more water, eat more fruit, take some regular daily exercise and all the rest of it. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to give up coffee completely, and there was a small problem with post Christmas chocs….. – but I did my best.
At the end of my seven days I felt good for having had a clear out, but I can’t say I felt any great surge of energy. And I’m sorry to report that I lost neither weight nor inches. However I’m going to take this as a good sign that in fact, I wasn’t very toxic in the first place – and my excess poundage is probably fat and not water retention at all.
I’m sure that the products have a dramatic effect on some people, especially after the Christmas excesses, but I guess that I have done more for my long term health by giving up alcohol then a week of herbal remedies could hope to do.
I will be going back to the AVogel site – I love their Bio-Snacky sprouting seeds and I love the fact that there is so much information and advice on the site. As to detox, well it seems its not for me.
