I was contacted by Gousto, who produce lovely recipe boxes with orgnaic ingredients. They asked if I would like to try one of their boxes and have also given me a free box to give away to one of my readers. Naturally I jumped at the chance.
I have two children aged 9 and 11, so I selected a box for 4 people. I chose the three receipes of the week which most appealed to me:
Chorizo & Giant Couscous with Coriander Yoghurt
Pan-Fried Turkey in Chilli, Lemon & Cream Sauce
Spicy Shakshouka with Toasted Pita Bread
Gousto delivers on Tuesdays if you live in London and on Wednesdays and Fridays if you live outside of London. On our allotted delivery day – I received a text to say that the box would arrive by 12pm. It eventually came at 2pm but that was fine by me. It was beautifully packed in a big box with a wool-based linking to keep it cool and several ice packs which were still frozen, so the food all arrived in perfect condition.
Here is a selection of what I received:
Fruit & Veg
Rice, grains, herbs and spices, all measured out precisely
And some lovely organic meat
The recipes were beautifaully set out on cards and were very easy to follow.
Each of them told me how ling it would take to cook , which was very accurate. I’m not normally a great one for cooking from scratch so I had great fun preparing these dishes.
Chopping up all the veggies
Making the cream and chili sauce for the turkey
Cooking the chorizo and couscous
I had great fun making these dishes and they were all delicious. The cooking wasn’t complicated at all, but it did feel good to be making a bit of an effort for a change. I liked the fact that all the portion sizes were pre-measured – so you didn’t have to buy a whole pot of spice when you only use it once. I also liked the fact that I got to try the spice Ras El Hanout, which I had never used before. i think this would be a great way for me and my family to experience a lot of foods just outside our comfort zones….
The portion sizes were ample – they would have easily fed four adults, and so we had some leftovers (which did me for lunch the next day).
My children enjoyed the creamy turkey dish and enjoyed the chorizo and couscous (although I kept the spice level a bit lower than the recipe called for). They weren’t so fond of the Shakshouka – I could probably just have done that for the two of us. All in all though it was great fun, and while I wouldn’t want to cook from scratch like that every week, it was still something that I think we might do now and again.
