We have a lovely branch of The Works in our town. When the children were smaller it used to be one of their favourite places to go on a Saturday. The shop is small and piled high, a higgledy-piggledy mass of books, toys and all sorts of lovely stuff – never the same things twice. And the deep discounts meant that I could usually find something to treat them with which suited my budget.
Now they are a bit bigger, and going to the toy and book shop has fallen out of favour. Nowadays books are bought on the Kindle, and shopping with the children is a chore, when necessity dictates (like school shoes) , and no longer a great adventure for them.
So when the Works asked me to take a second look at their website, I wasn’t sure what I was going to find. To be honest I didn’t even know they had a website – I’ve only ever really thought of it as a super cheap bookshop rather than an online venture.
It’s been a while since I visited the shop too and we all grew up a bit since then – what was I likely to find in there for me or for my young teenagers?
So I clicked onto theworks.co.uk and within five seconds I was amazed. Outdoor toys – I never knew they sold those….footballs, water pistols and badminton sets. A big paddling pool – even teenagers can get some joy out of that on a hot summer’s day.
And for me – craft supplies – papercrafts, jewellery making and knitting and stitching. Artist’s materials and this year’s trend – the grown up colouring book.
That reminds me – I think the last time my daughter dragged me into the Works was when the loom bands craze was in full swing – they were fully on top of the trends that year, with a huge selection of cheap loom band accessories, and they seem to be with it again with this year’s big craft thing.
So continuing my search, I also found that they even sell office supplies and stationery, home bits and pet supplies. I must admit I am flabbergasted.
At the moment they are offering up to 20% off, and free delivery on purchases above £10 with a code on site. They also have a click and collect service with delivery to any of 300 stores Nationwide.
I’m going to be taking a second look in my local branch of the Works next time I am passing that way, and I’ll be trying them out for some of the other bits and bobs I buy online too
