Here is another one in my regular series about mums in business and what they do. Today I’m interviewing Helen Chaldicott of Phoenix Trading
Tell us a bit about you – what did you do before Phoenix; what else do you do?
I’m Helen and a mum to 2 girls aged 7 and 9. When I started with Phoenix Trading I was working part time in an office doing financial and office admin. I was made redundant 2 years ago and now continue to run my Phoenix business as well as look after my 2 girls and occasionally volunteer in their school.
How did you find out about your company and why did you decide to join?
One of my friends approached me to have a party and then after that I took a basket of cards and bought so much she suggested that I joined myself. It made financial sense as I was buying so many cards for all the birthday parties my children were invited to! Plus, I love the products!
Tell us a bit about Phoenix
Phoenix Trading has been going for over 20 years and sells good quality cards, gift wrap and stationery items at affordable prices. We’ve recently expanded the range to include colouring in products so there is something for all ages.
What is your favourite product within your company and what is so special about it?
The cards! I can’t choose one specifically as they are all so lovely but having access to the range means I am always able to find a suitable card for every occasion.
How do you spread the word about your company – do you do parties? Do you run stalls? Do you sell online?
I have a Facebook page to promote my business as well as attending fairs; toddler groups; WI evenings etc. I also do parties and take my ‘pop up shop’ to businesses so the employees can buy over their lunchbreaks. I also use baskets/bags of cards and loan them out to people or businesses for a week or so to browse and buy at their convenience.
How do you fit this in with your family and other commitments?
I try to mostly fit my business in during school hours – toddler groups/lunchtime businesses etc. I do parties in the evening once the kids are in bed and my husband is home. I also work some weekends when fete season is on – usually summer and Christmas are the busy ones but I try not to work every weekend so I still have family time. Baskets and bags of cards can be dropped off during the day/evening or on the way to one of the kids activities.
Do you receive a lot of training about your products and how to sell them? Tell us about the support you get from your upline?
Phoenix provide a great ‘getting started’ online programme and my upline is really supportive and always on the end of the phone/text if I have any questions. She also holds regular team meetings and we also have a facebook page so we can communicate that way too.
What’s the most fun thing about doing what you do?
Meeting people and getting to show off all our gorgeous products!
Is there anything that niggles you about your company – what could they do better?
Nothing really. Everyone involved all the way up to Head Office is very supportive.
If somebody wanted to join your company how would they sign up and what advice would you give them?
New joiners can join my team via my website www.phabulouscards.co.uk We have 3 offers to choose from and to suit all budgets from our £35 friends and family pack, to our £75 starter pack or our fantastic value £200 business pack – they all provide you with everything you need to get your business off the ground from day one.
Anything else you want to tell us about Phoenix Trading – any special offers, promos or anything else you want to plug….?
I currently have a ‘golden ticket’ which if you join up before the end of July will give you up to £70 worth of extra product!
