How to make extra income at home - Mum's the Boss

In today’s digital age, making money from the comfort of your home is definitely possible but many times seems more like an unachievable dream instead of reality. Making money from home is actually very achievable and can be done by anyone – that’s the magic of it!

Over the last six months many of us have been working from home, and if that is you, maybe you will have discovered, like I did, that you enjoy being at home with your children, rather than going off to an office every day and putting them in childcare.

Once I realised I didn’t want to go back to work, I tried many things in the self-employment line – if you want to read the whole story up to now you can find it here (Caution – this is six posts long and goes on a bit!) I’ve finished up with blogging and social media management as a portfolio, but there are so many other ways to make money using your computer.

As we’re talking about all things digital, Ad Lab, Magento agency within London, joined me to share some work-from-home ideas and opportunities.

Create an eCommerce store

Have you always dreamt of having your little corner of the internet where you’d sell some handmade crafts? Maybe you don’t make any product yourself but are passionate about a certain product in the market and would like to be a supplier? Ad Lab recommends creating an eCommerce store on the Magento or WordPress platforms and start selling the products you love.

Once you’ve created an online store, you will have to promote your store and the products you offer to gain more visibility. Carolina from Ad Lab says that Google Ads are a great way to increase your brand’s awareness and generate more sales for your business. Becoming a google partner like Ad Lab, will help to sell google ads.

Winning awards helps drive business, check out Ad Lab on awwwards.com, depending on your business type, there are plenty of small business awards that you can apply for.  You can also do a podcast to drive awareness, here’s one we did with James Sinclair.

Start a blog

As Family Budgeting mentions, “If you love browsing through various blogs and always thought “what if I started my own?” – it might be time to actually do it.”

Starting a blog is not only a great hobby, if I do say so myself, but it’s also a great way to earn some money on the side. You can talk about all the things you love, share ideas and thoughts with like-minded people and earn some money from sponsored posts, display ads and much more.

Give affiliate marketing a try

Affiliate marketing is one of my favourite ways of making passive income. It’s easy and anyone can do it. There are plenty of affiliate programmes that you can join, including Amazon Associates, which allows you to earn up to 12% in commissions fees from the sales of products that you’ve promoted.

Sell your skills

Are you social media savvy and love to interact with others? Maybe you could try social media management for businesses that simply don’t have the time or have no social media knowledge. I also have friends who freelance as lawyers, journalists, coaches, therapists and so many more things

Perhaps you love writing and would love to make some money from it? Why not sell your writing skills on websites such as People Per Hour or Fiverr? The world is your oyster… or better the internet is your oyster!

Choosing your home business is not plain sailing, but with a bit of thought you can come up with the business that will suit you down to the ground. And if you get the right one, then you and your family will be happier (and hopefully wealthier too!)
