As my friends start to reach their late forties, many of them have parents who are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary in the near future. My parents celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary even though they were only married for eighteen years! It was the best day ever – thankfully everyone remained on very good terms after the split and it was a perfect family occasion.

Some parents might just want to mark the day with a meal out or something simple, and others might not want to leave the house, (thanks COVID!), but some older folks might be up for a full-on party after the year that has been. Life has been woefully short of parties just recently, so if your parents feel like they want to go large and celebrate, then it’s worth starting to plan now, in the hope that such an event will be allowed sometime soon

If you find yourself planning a big anniversary party for an older couple once social distancing eases and we are allowed to party again here are some party game ideas to make the event go with a bang.

How Well Do You Know the Couple?

This is one of the most popular golden wedding anniversary games. In this game, the anniversary pair is interviewed on topics like their first date, their first pet, annoying habits, charming qualities, etc. before the party.

During the anniversary party, ask the guests some 10-20 questions about the couple and collect their answers on a piece of paper. Present a prize to the guest who answers most of the questions correctly.

A Game for the Celebrating Couple

Put two chairs back to back on stage and ask the celebrating couple to sit on each chair. Provide pens and notepads to each of them.

Now, ask them interesting questions like:

  • Who talks more?
  • Who cooks better
  • Who does most of the household chores
  • Who gets up earlier in the morning
  • Who is more punctual
  • Who is more spendthrift
  • What was the day of their wedding

See how many of their answers match.

Give them prizes for each of the matching answers. This hilarious game will keep everyone amused at the party.

Balloon game

This is one of the simplest 50th wedding anniversary games that you can include to pump up the fun factor. Inflate balloons and put gold confetti in each baloon along with strips of paper with messages like “no prize for you”, “better luck next time”, “try again”, and so on.

Have one piece of paper with the golden anniversary pair’s name scribbled with gold-coloured ink in a balloon. Ask the guests to choose their balloons and burst them to get their chits. The one who gets the chit with celebrating the couple’s name wins the game and a prize.

Alterntively, here’s another interesting game with decorated balloons. First, prepare a list of famous celebrity couples and write the names of each celebrity on separate chits. Place the chits in balloons and let the guests choose their balloons.

Ask them to burst their balloons and find the guest who got the chit with the name of their celebrity partner. This is a great icebreaker to start the party.

Match the couples

Ask the couples attending your party to bring old photos from their wedding day or from the year that the host couple got married, and write their names on the back of the photos. Collect these pictures when your guests arrive and number them.

During the party, move around the tables and ask the guests to identify people in the photos and write down their answers on paper against the number assigned to each photo.

Read the answers aloud once you have circulated the photos on all the tables. Award a small gift to the participant who matches most of the pictures correctly.

Paper dance

If there is music at your party, you can include this game idea. Participants are supposed to dance on big chart papers or broadsheet newspapers with music playing in the background.

After each round, papers are folded in half, and couples are asked to keep dancing on the paper. When the music stops, couples who stepped outside the paper are eliminated. Eventually, the couple that lasts the longest on the dance floor is declared the winner.

Final Word

Your parents’ 50th wedding anniversary is a special occasion and if they ask you to help them plan a party then you can really make it a special one. Make sure you buy lovely 50th wedding anniversary gifts for them too, to show your love and appreciation for them.

You can also give away prizes like a box of chocolates, gift certificates, a reservation for a couple at the celebrating couple’s favourite restaurant etc., to the guests who win golden anniversary games at the party.

Happy partying!
