Today I have some very special tea to give away on the blog.
I was contacted by the lovely people at Zest Tea, and they sent me some samples of their tea to review.
Zest Tea bills itself as high-caffeine energy tea. There are 6 flavours and each one of them will give you three times as much caffeine as regular tea, and even more than a mug of coffee.
However, they have added in some extra bits too, for example, the amino acid L-Theanine. A study published on PubMed suggests that “L-theanine and caffeine in combination are beneficial for improving performance on cognitively demanding tasks.” Anecdotally, L-Theanine assists caffeine to produce a “steady alertness”, with fewer spikes and less jittery feelings
Another big advantage of drinking tea for energy is that you don’t have to add milk or sugar to get the full effects. The tea as sold has no added sugar, no genetically modified ingredients, and all-natural flavourings.
So is it any good?
Zest tea comes in six flavours;
- Blue Lady (black tea with hibscus, passionfruit, orange peel and cirus flavours)
- Spicy Masala Chai (blakc tea with cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and cloves)
- Pomegranate Mojito (green tea with peppermint, pomegranate and lime)
- Superberry Samba (green tea with passionflower, safflower, paasionfruit strawberry and acai)
- Earl Grey (black tea with bergamot)
- Cinnamon Apple (black tea with cinnamon and apple)
These six flavours come in loose-leaf or as teabags. I received a sample of teabags covering the first four flavours, and a pouch containing 20 bags of Blue Lady Tea.
Before I give my verdict – one little caveat. As a relatively mature lady, in full throes of menopause, I have a love-hate relationship with caffeine. I absolutely live for my morning coffee, and do nothing until I have had at least one.
However I will drink a maximum of 2-3 cups a day and always before midday, then I switch to decaf or herbal tea for the rest of the day, as I have discovered that I sleep better this way.
So I’m probably not exactly the ideal customer that this tea is aimed at. However, I also have an 18-year old daughter, currently burning the candle at both ends, celebrating with her friends after finishing her A-levels. She also loves her caffeine, loves tea too, and she, unlike me, can still drink it whenever with no ill effects. I remember those times well…
The package of tea arrived just after midday, on what had already been a three-coffees type of a morning… but I’m still somewhat in denial about how much caffeine I can and cannot take, and I went ahead and made a mugful of Blue Lady immediately. And I certainly did receive a caffeine jolt and knew about it, although in this case, it was enough for me to know that I had gone over my daily limit, and wasn’t exactly a pleasant place to start.
However, I realised that this was my own silly fault, and so I continued experimenting over the next few days. I’ve discovered that my favourites are the green tea flavours (Pomegranate Mojito and Superberry Samba) and I like to steep them for the lower end of the 2-3 minutes recommended. I’ve been using them as my second hot drink of the morning and have found that they make a pleasant alternative to coffee – a nice drink to have at my desk as I start the working day.
My daughter on the other hand, is polishing off all of the flavours, and is pretty impressed so far. She tends to be a night owl, and when she has to get up early to go somewhere she is very happy to have Zest tea instead of black coffee. Her favourite flavour is the Blue Lady, which she takes strong, with a dash of almond milk. I can see myself buying more of this and gifting it to her as she heads off to university in September. It will be great for those overnight essay marathons, that I know she will end up doing, just as I did.
So In conclusion, I will say that Zest Tea definitely does what it says on the tin, and the flavours are yummy too. I definitely recommend it!
