Is it time to relaunch your mum blog? Has it been gathering dust while you fret about it and wonder what went wrong? With the kids going back to school in September, this might be the perfect opportunity.

I still remember how scary it was when I first started blogging back in 2010. I had precisely no idea what I was going to say, nor how I would find a receptive audience. And yet, I did it anyway, made it up as I went along, made a lot of mistakes while finding my own path, and here I still am, blogging away merrily, and using my experience to help others with their blogs and digital marketing.

In the beginning, blogging was a fun hobby for me, which provided many interesting and fun opportunities for me and my family, but I also remember hitting roadblocks, and having times when I really felt like quitting. Occasionally I wrote posts which hit the spot and went viral, and yet often my posts just bombed, or even attracted active criticism and haters, leaving me bewildered, A few times I stepped back from my blogs because I felt like an imposter and that I wasn’t getting anywhere, and sometimes I took a break because real life got in the way for a while..

I have relaunched my blogs more times than I care to think about, changed the focus of my message a bit as the children got older and my parenting style and focus evolved. I’m having another soft rebrand at the moment , where I’ve picked a few pet topics to focus on for the next few months to see how that goes.

So how about you? Are you happy with the general focus and direction of your blog, or are you falling out of love with it a bit? Are you considering giving up, or are you just thinking of freshening it up, relaunching or rebranding?

Whichever it is, you certainly won’t be alone in this, I hear it all the time. When you started your blog, you were full of ideas, eager to share your journey, and maybe even hoping to connect with other mums going through similar experiences. But somewhere along the way, things didn’t quite go as planned. Maybe life got in the way, your content didn’t seem to resonate, or the numbers just weren’t what you hoped for and your monetisation strategy just didn’t happen. But here’s the thing: it’s never too late to give it another try, and this time, with a bit more wisdom under your belt, and a bit of support.

If you are planning to polish off and relaunch your neglected blog and give it another go, then read on.

How to Relaunch your Blog and Reignite your Blogging Spark

1: Revisit Your “Why”:

Before you relaunch, think back to why you started your blog in the first place? Was it to share your journey as a mum, connect with others, make money, or maybe just as a creative outlet to keep your mum brain active? Reminding yourself of your original motivation can help reignite that initial passion, or maybe you will realise your motivation has changed a bit now and you want to do things differently this time.

2: Set Realistic Goals:

It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers—followers, likes, shares—but those metrics don’t define your blog’s value. Focus on creating content that you’re proud of and that resonates with you. Second time around you will have more idea of what is realistically possible for you, and you can set small, achievable goals, like posting once a week or interacting with a certain number of readers.

3: Learn from Your Experience

What worked well in your first attempt? What didn’t? Use these lessons to shape your new approach. Maybe you need a content plan, or perhaps you realised that shorter, more frequent posts work better for you than long essay style rambles. Maybe you could try vlogging or podcasting if that appeals to you more than writing?

4: Find Your Community:

The thing I love most about blogging that kept me going when times were hard, is the amazing supportive community of bloggers. I have online friends that I have never met in person, yet I know as much about their lives and care for them every bit as much as my in person besties. Blogging is not a competitive sport – it is collaborative – we all rise when we help and support each other. There are countless online communities of mum bloggers who share tips, support each other, and collaborate. Connecting with others in your niche can provide encouragement and new ideas.

Blogging doesn’t have to be a solo journey. Finding a community of fellow bloggers who understand your challenges can be a game-changer. In my group, The Blogging Mums Club, which was founded in 2011, you’ll find a network of supportive bloggers who are all navigating the same path. We share tips, provide feedback, and most importantly, lift each other up when things get tough.

5: Be Kind to Yourself:

Perfection is a myth, especially in the world of blogging. Your blog doesn’t need to be flawless from day one—or ever. It simply needs to be a representation of you in all your glory, and all your weirdness. It’s okay to make mistakes, experiment with new stuff, change direction, or take breaks. The most important thing is that you’re doing something that brings you joy.

Identifying Common Blogging Challenges (and How to Overcome Them)

1: Inconsistent Posting Schedule:

One of the most common challenges is finding the time and energy to post regularly. Between juggling family, work, and personal time, it’s easy for blogging to slip down the priority list, especially in the early stages where your blog is not providing any income or return for you

Solution: Start by setting a realistic goal for how often you can post. If once a week feels overwhelming, try once every two weeks. Consistency is more important than frequency, so even a small, regular commitment can make a big difference. You could also try batching your content—setting aside a block of time to write multiple posts at once—so you have a backlog ready to go.

2: Struggling to Find Your Voice:

Many mums start blogging with a clear vision, but over time, it can be hard to maintain that original voice. You might start to wonder if your content is interesting or if anyone is even listening.

Solution: Revisit the posts you enjoyed writing the most. What about them felt true to you? What topics sparked joy? Then look at your analytics – which posts were the most popular and got the most views. Are they the same ones that you enjoyed writing?

Focus on those two areas and remember that your unique perspective is what will attract and retain readers. It’s okay to experiment and refine your voice as you go—your blog should evolve with you.

3: Lack of Engagement:

It can be disheartening to put your heart into a post and not see the engagement you expected. You might feel like you’re shouting into the void.

Solution: Engagement doesn’t always come immediately, and it can take time to build a community. Start by actively engaging with other bloggers—comment on their posts, share their content, and build genuine connections. You may also need to work on your promotion techniques and your social media presence, and spend as much time promoting your blog as you do writing it, and even more time interacting with other blogs.

Joining a community of like-minded bloggers can also make a big difference. The Blogging Mums Club is a great place to connect with other bloggers who are going through the same challenges – you don’t even need to be a mum to join. In this supportive space, you can share tips, ask for feedback, and even collaborate with others to boost your visibility.

4: Feeling Overwhelmed by Tech:

Maybe the technical side of blogging—setting up your site, SEO, or social media—felt like a steep learning curve, and it became a roadblock.
Solution: Focus on the basics first. You don’t need to master everything at once. There are plenty of resources out there, and within The Blogging Mums Club, you can find support from other members who might have the expertise you need. Additionally, as you consider relaunching your blog, it might be worth investing in a course, a blog audit, a coaching session, or workshop to get you up to speed with the technical aspects of blogging in a more structured way.

5: Get real about Monetisation

if you are actively seeking to make money from your blog, then this demands a more cogent and well-planned strategy than if you are just writing a blog as a creative outlet. It is very much easier to monetise a blog that has a very narrow focused niche than one with a broad spectrum. There are many ways to monetise a blog but most of them rely on having a regular readership who have specific needs which you can satisfy.

Solution: If you are seeking to monetise your blog, you will do better if you define a narrow, specific niche for yourself and write posts that demonstrate your expertise in the niche topics, and answer questions that your target customer may have.

In this respect, Mum’s the Boss is not ideal – I insist on covering parenting, lifestyle tips, small business tips, home, gardening and travel. I enjoy writing the blog like this, I’m happy with it and I think people enjoy reading it, but I accept that Google has absolutely no idea what the main topic of my blog is, and as such, it is unlikely to become a roaring success in any of these areas. So do as I say, not as I do, if you want to make serious money.

Exciting News: Relaunch Your Blog with Confidence

I know that restarting a blog can feel daunting, but I’m here to help. This September, I’ll be launching a course/workshop specifically designed to help you reconnect with your blog and relaunch it with renewed confidence. Whether you need help finding your voice, setting up a content plan, or navigating the technical aspects, this course will provide you with the tools and support you need to make your blog a success this time around.

I will be beta testing this workshop in the Blogging Mums Club in September and it will be free to group members who sign up for the first run-through of it. I plan to sell the course eventually but it will be good to include some case studies and testimonials, so I’m looking for some guinea pigs who have been thinking about relaunching their blog , and who are willing to give things another try

You’ve already taken the brave step to start a blog once—now it’s time to give yourself the chance to shine. Join The Blogging Mums Club today to stay updated on the course and start connecting with other mums who are on the same journey. Together, we can make your blogging dreams a reality.
