*Collaborative post* Depending on who you believe, Network Marketing or MLM is either the next best thing, and most incredible way ever to make money from home, or it’s a total scam, waste of money, and not worth your time and effort.

It’s amazing how a simple business model can cause so much disagreement – with ardent lovers and absolute haters at each other’s throats all over social media.

So which viewpoint is right? Well, there is something to be said for both of them. It is possible to do very well in Network Marketing, if you choose a product or service that you are really passionate about, and if you are prepared to sell like the clappers and hustle every step of the way.

Yet, the absolute fact is that the vast majority of people who join a network marketing company will make no money at all, and many will even get into debt, so it’s no wonder that some people consider it all a big con.

If you are considering signing up with a network marketing company, here are a few tips to help you to be one of the successes and not one of the pouty people calling it all a big scam

Whether you have a shop or you are selling using a catalogue at home,
it’s still selling and uses the same skills

#1: Network Marketing is a serious business

If anyone tries to recruit you by saying that you don’t have to sell their product, that it literally walks off the shelves by itself and it’s easy money, run away immediately. The people who succeed in all branches of network marketing are those who work their asses off, and whether they call it attraction marketing or whatever the latest terminology is, the fact is, it is still selling and hustling.

While this is a business you can take on in your spare time, you aren’t going to reap the financial rewards if you don’t take it seriously. This is the first mistake people make with network marketing, so if you’re new to the game, let this be our first warning to you. You need to put the effort in. To elevate your career, you need to arm yourself with knowledge and training and continue learning so you can eventually become a top earner.

You need to treat it like a business, setting up your own social media channels and website (within the limitations that your company allows) so you can market what you have to offer, and finding ways to generate new leads. The more work you put in, the more success you will find; it’s a no-brainer really!

#2: Don’t waste time targeting the wrong people

To start off with, you need to pick a product or service that people in your social circle might use at the price that your company is offering. When you start out, you will be prospecting from among your friends and relatives, so make sure you have something that they might like.

Why talk to somebody who has zero interest in what you are selling? It’s pointless, and you will only be wasting your time. You need to consider the product that you have to offer and then look for people who might genuinely be interested in it.

This includes those people you might talk to from your family and friends, your neighbours, people in your usual workplace, and any of your contacts on social media.

This then extends to paid advertisements you may use to generate leads online. The ads need to be on those websites that are guaranteed to attract interest, as you won’t get a lot of clicks otherwise. You need to find the right keywords to improve your ad targeting too. It’s time-consuming we know, but by asking for referrals when marketing offline and by using some of these Javascript solutions for Google Ads when marketing online, you will make life easier for you, and (hopefully) improve your success rate.

#3: Follow up regularly with potential prospects

The chances of somebody calling you back when you have prospected them are often slim to none. People lead busy lives, so if they didn’t make a decision when you first marketed to them, they might have forgotten all about you and the product you’re offering. So, don’t spend time checking your phone or your email inbox hoping for a response.

Assuming you took their contact details, do the sensible thing and get in touch with them to see if they are still interested in what you have to offer. And to ensure you don’t miss out on a prospect in the future, after you have finished your initial meeting with somebody, arrange a follow-up appointment so you don’t lose sight of them.

Network marketing is not a scam or a con. It’s a real business or possibly even a profession, and anyone who joins can succeed. But it takes passion, dedication, good training and hard work. Nothing comes for free, and if you try to start a business and don’t take advice and follow the path you are offered, then you will never succeed.
