What is your Money Mindset?

Money mindset is essentially how we think and feel about money. It encompasses our beliefs, attitudes, and habits around earning, spending, saving, and investing. A positive money mindset can significantly impact our financial health, helping us make better decisions and achieve our financial goals.

Becoming a Mum: Changing Your Money Outlook

When I became a mum, my entire world changed, including my outlook on money. Suddenly, I wasn’t just responsible for myself anymore. There was this tiny human who depended on me for everything, and that included financial security. Nappies, baby food, childcare, it all added up quickly. My old habits of impulsive shopping and neglecting to save were no longer sustainable. I had to develop a new money mindset that was both practical and future-focused.

What is the Meaning of Money Mindset?

At its core, money mindset is about how you view money. Do you see it as a scarce resource that you must scrimp and save, or as a tool that can help you achieve your dreams and provide security for your family? Having a healthy money mindset means understanding that while money isn’t everything, managing it wisely is crucial for reducing stress and enjoying life.

What is the Right Money Mindset?

The right money mindset involves finding a balance between enjoying the present and planning for the future. It’s about setting realistic goals depending on your means, being disciplined yet flexible, and understanding that your financial situation can improve with the right strategies and mindset. It’s not about deprivation but about making informed choices that align with your values and priorities.

What is the Financial Role of a Mother?

As a busy working mum, my financial role is multifaceted. I am not just managing my finances, but also setting an example for my children. It’s about budgeting for day-to-day expenses, planning for bigger future costs like Christmas and school holidays, and being prepared for unexpected expenses like car MOTs. Whenn my children see me planning my spending and making strategic decisions about money, it’s also teaching them about the value of money through everyday actions and conversations.

Why Budgeting and Planning for the Future is Essential

Budgeting: Your Financial Roadmap

Budgeting is crucial for a busy working mum. It’s like a roadmap for your money, telling you where it should go instead of wondering where it went. A budget helps you prioritise your spending, ensuring that your family’s needs are met first. It also allows you to allocate funds for future expenses, reducing financial stress.

Planning for Christmas and School Holidays

Christmas can be a financially stressful time, especially if you haven’t planned ahead. By setting aside a small amount each month, you can build up a fund for gifts, decorations, and festive meals without feeling the pinch in December.

School holidays are another expense that can catch you off guard. Whether it’s paying for childcare, activities, or a family trip, planning ahead can make these times more enjoyable and less stressful.

**Tip:** I started a “holiday fund” jar where I put loose change and small bills throughout the year. By the time summer rolls around, we have a nice little stash for fun activities!

Being Prepared for the MOT and Other Unexpected Expenses

Car maintenance, like the annual MOT, can be a significant expense if you’re not prepared. Setting aside a small amount each month for car maintenance can save you from scrambling for funds when these expenses arise. This principle applies to other unexpected costs too – having an emergency fund is a lifesaver.

Everyday Examples of Developing a Positive Money Mindset

1. Practicing Gratitude: I start each day by writing down three things I’m grateful for, including non-material blessings. This practice shifts my focus from what I lack to what I have, reducing the urge for unnecessary spending.

2. Setting Financial Goals: Whether it’s paying off a credit card, saving for a family holiday, or building an emergency fund, having clear goals keeps me motivated and disciplined.

3.Money Affirmations: I use positive affirmations to reinforce my money mindset.

Phrases like “I am in control of my finances” and “I am building a secure future for my family” help me stay focused and confident, although they don’t always go to plan.  One morning, I was saying my money affirmations aloud, “I am a money magnet!” My five-year-old overheard and asked, “Mummy, if you’re a magnet, can you attract more ice cream too?” It was a good laugh and a reminder that while affirmations are powerful, they’re not magic – consistent actions are what truly make the difference.
