Our homes should be a safe space where we can relax without stress or worry. However, homes can often pose a danger to adults and children alike, so as a parent you must strive to eliminate risks and make your home safe for everyone in it.

How can this be done? Thankfully, there are a few simple steps you can take to improve the safety of your home. We’ve listed a few ways to keep your family safe below. Keep reading to find out more.

Keep a First Aid Kit to Hand

No matter how diligently you work to protect your family, accidents still can and do happen. The key to preventing these accidents from having serious consequences is to be prepared. Having a family first aid kit to hand is essential and can allow you to treat minor injuries at home. Make sure your first aid kit is well stocked with things including plasters, bandages, dressings, antiseptic, tweezers, and painkillers. You should regularly go over your first aid kit and ensure you have everything you need, and that any creams or medicines are in date.

It is also well worth while as a parent attending a First Aid Course which is relevant to the ages of your children. I had done First Aid training for the workplace before, and knew the basics, but when I had my children, I attended a specialist First Aid course for babies and toddlers. it teaches you how to do CPR and other manoeuvres on smaller bodies, but also shows you some hazards that exist in the home that adults probably wouldn’t notice but that can cause problems for children.

Identify Hazards

Homes can be full of potential hazards, some of which may be more obvious than others. Slips and trips can be commonplace; you can reduce the risk of these by clearing clutter away from floor space and securing loose rugs or carpets. This is particularly important in the bathroom, where water can make underfoot surfaces slippery and dangerous.

It’s definitely a good idea to put locks on cupboards where you store cleaning chemicals or anything else which comes in a packet or a bottle but is not fit for human consumption. Until children can read, they are not able to discern whether something is edible or not – the only way they can find out is by sampling it. So make sure that those things are locked away or out of reach or both.

If you have small children, it’s important that you place covers over all electrical sockets. Children are inquisitive by nature, and could potentially put their fingers or another object into plug sockets. This can cause serious injury or even death, as the electricity burns the body and affects the heart.

Have a Fire Safety Plan

House fires are more common than you might think. Through 2020 and 2021, there were more than 33,000 house fires in the UK alone. First, you need to identify and rectify any potential fire hazards in your home. Some of the most common causes of fire are cooking appliances, electrical devices, and smoking. Ensure you never leave cooking appliances unattended and always make sure electrical devices are in good condition and switched off when not in use.

If a fire was to break out in your home, having a proper safety plan in place is the most effective way of keeping your family safe. Identify at least two escape routes excluding the main doors and ensure these are easily and safely accessible. Make sure everyone in the family knows what the plan is should there be a fire in the home.

Conclusion

Keeping your family safe should be your number one priority. There can be more dangers lurking in your home than you might realise, so knowing the potential risks is the first step to ensuring your family’s safety. Keep a family first aid kit on hand, identify all potential hazards, and have a fire safety plan in place.
