Running a small business as a busy mum can often feel like spinning plates while someone keeps adding more. You’re trying to grow something meaningful, bring in income, and keep a dozen other responsibilities going at the same time. Some days, just thinking about your online presence feels like one more overwhelming thing on the list.
But what if there were small, smart actions you could take, without needing hours of uninterrupted time or a massive marketing budget? That’s exactly what this post is about.
I’m sharing some simple, practical online strategies that you can implement straight away. These are the kinds of tasks I’ve used myself (and shared with clients), that create real traction without the burnout. Whether you’re brand new to running a business or you’ve been at it a while, these quick wins can help you start showing up, being seen, and making sales with confidence. You can even print out a summary of my points and pin it to your noticeboard so you can tackle them, one day at a time,
Polish Your Social Media Bio
Your social media bio is one of the most overlooked marketing tools you have. When someone stumbles across your Instagram or Facebook page, it takes them just seconds to decide whether they’ll stick around or click away. Is your bio working hard enough?
Think of it as your mini elevator pitch. It should clearly state who you help, how you help them, and what they should do next. I once had a coaching client who changed her bio from a vague personal statement to something much more direct and client-focused—and within a week, she booked three new calls.
Quick win: Update your bio today with a clear call to action and link to your latest offer or freebie.
Create or Optimise Your Google Business Profile
Many mums I work with assume that because they don’t have a physical shop or high street presence, they don’t need to worry about Google listings. But even if your services are delivered entirely online, people often prefer to work with others who are local to them, and so your Google Business Profile can be a powerful tool for helping new clients find you.
Setting it up is simple. Go to Google Business Profile and create or claim your listing. You can hide your address if you work from home and simply list your service area. This gives you visibility in local search results when someone types in something like “virtual assistant for mums UK” or “online therapist in Surrey.”
Upload a friendly photo or two, describe your services using relevant keywords, and keep your opening hours up to date. I’ve had clients gain enquiries within days of setting up their profile.
If you want more help with this, or if local SEO just feels like a minefield, you might consider speaking with a good professional digital marketing agency They can help ensure your business appears in the right places online and that your local visibility is working as hard as you are.

Ask for Customer Reviews
Positive reviews do far more than boost your ego—they build trust, credibility, and search visibility. When someone’s deciding whether to work with you, a handful of thoughtful, genuine reviews can tip the scales in your favour.
I recommend getting into the habit of asking for reviews right after a positive experience with a client. Keep it simple. Something like, “Would you mind leaving a short Google review about your experience? Here’s the link.”
Those star ratings show up on your Google profile and help more people feel confident in reaching out.
I once worked with a reflexologist who was hesitant about asking for testimonials. After helping her get just five local reviews, she began ranking in the top three for her area—and her appointment calendar filled up almost immediately.
If you’re already doing great work, reviews simply help more people find and trust you.

Refresh Your Website Home Page
You don’t need a complete redesign to make your website more effective. Often, a few small tweaks to your home page can drastically improve clarity and conversions.
Start by asking yourself these questions: Does your home page clearly state what you do? Who it’s for? What the next step is? If not, rework your headline and introductory text to be more specific and client-focused.
Keep it simple. Too much information can overwhelm a visitor. Instead, lead them gently towards one main action—whether it’s booking a call, joining your mailing list, or reading your latest post.

Your website needs to load quickly to stop customers from navigating away in frustration. If you’re not sure how your site is performing, try running a quick check using Ubersuggest to see how your site ranks for relevant search terms and whether there are any technical issues to fix.
Remember to make sure your website works as it should on mobile too. More and more web traffic comes from mobile phones or other devices, but getting the design to work away from a desktop is still too often an afterthought for many businesses. A site your customers can use easily will help you stand out from the crowd.
You could also try to drive more organic traffic by blogging more frequently and using hashtags and links to be more visible on search engines. When it comes to sales and exposure, traffic is what’s going to get your business there. When you can increase your site’s organic traffic, you’ll see sales like never before and also reach a much larger audience. You can also create a well-rounded SEO strategy to help you website out, and there are plenty of companies all around that can increase your website’s traffic in no time!
Offer a Freebie to Grow Your Email List
Email marketing remains one of the most reliable ways to grow your business online, and a freebie—sometimes called a lead magnet—is the best way to start building that list.
Think about what your ideal client is struggling with right now. What’s one quick win you could offer to help them? Maybe it’s a checklist, a short video tutorial, a mini ebook, or a simple planner.
Keep it focused and solve one specific problem. I’ve seen one-page checklists outperform full e-courses because they’re quick, valuable, and easy to consume.
You can create your freebie in Canva and use a platform like MailerLite or ConvertKit to deliver it automatically when someone signs up.
Repurpose Your Existing Content
You don’t have to constantly create new content to stay visible. Instead, repurpose what you already have.
Take a blog post you’ve written and turn the key points into a carousel for Instagram. Record a quick reel or voice note explaining one tip in your own words. Pull out a quote or insight and use it as a caption or email subject line.
Canva is a brilliant tool for this, especially now that it includes content planning templates and AI-generated design suggestions. With a bit of batching, you can create a whole week’s worth of posts from one original idea.
This is one of the most sustainable ways to market your business without burning out.
Even this post has been rewritten several times – I update it every couple of years to add in new things that are working and dropping a few tips that have fallen out of fashion.
Get Strategic with Facebook Groups
Facebook groups can be a goldmine for connection, visibility, and even client leads—if you use them strategically.
Find one or two groups where your ideal clients are active. Show up regularly, share value, answer questions, and be helpful without pitching. When people see your name consistently and associate it with useful insights, they’ll naturally check out your profile and offers.
Some great UK-based options to explore include Mums in Business International, Freelance Lifestylers, and Self-Employed Club UK. Spend just ten minutes a day being genuinely engaged, and you’ll start to see results.
Batch and Schedule a Week of Content
One of the best habits I’ve developed is blocking out one hour a week to plan and schedule my content. It helps me stay consistent, avoid decision fatigue, and show up even during busy weeks.
Use tools like Meta Business Suite or Later to pre-schedule your posts. Map out your themes in advance—maybe it’s tips on Mondays, personal stories on Wednesdays, and testimonials on Fridays.
Don’t worry about being perfect. Focus on being present and helpful. When your content shows up regularly, your audience learns to trust you—and trust leads to sales.
Use AI to Beat the Blank Page
If you ever sit down to write a post and find yourself staring at a blinking cursor, AI tools can be a great support.
ChatGPT is a favourite of mine for brainstorming blog post titles, writing rough captions, or drafting email outlines. I use a suite of AI bots that are designed to help small business owners with blogging, writing sales pages and promoting online and on social media. I promote the bots I use in my shop – take a look at my AI toolkit for bloggers and business owners.
Some of the 2025 update of this post was written with AI, but I have also checked it thoroughly and added in my own experiences and opinions.
You can also use Answer the Public to see what real people are searching for around your niche, which helps you create more relevant content.
Just remember: AI is a starting point, not a replacement for your unique voice. The best content still comes from your experience and personality – but these tools can help you get there faster. I find them invaluable nowadays.
Start or Restart Your Email Newsletter
If you’ve got even a small list of subscribers, it’s time to reconnect. Your newsletter doesn’t need to be fancy—it just needs to be real.
Share something helpful, personal, or inspiring. Let them know what you’re working on. Invite them to book in, read your blog, or reply and say hi.
One of my clients recently sent out her first email in months and got two replies, one of which turned into a sale. People want to hear from you. You don’t need to wait until everything’s perfect.
