Instagram Marketing never stands still – of all the social platforms, this is the one that is always innovating and adding new things. I posted my first Instagram post back in 2012, less than 18 months after Instagram began, but to be honest I mainly used the platform for family and friends at first – I couldn’t really fathom it as a website for selling from or promoting my blog even.

I started posting vague business-related and motivational stuff around 2015, but to be honest it was all a bit half hearted with no real strategy. I thought Instagram was a bit young and trendy for me. I’ve only really looked at Instagram again recently, as my children are on it now, and it’s nice to see what they and their friends are up to, and also to keep in touch with some of the school parents, now we don’t meet at school any more.

Taking another look at Instagram Marketing

However, I have noticed that a lot of people are using Instagram to sell their products and services recently, and this year I set myself the task of reinvigorating my Instagram account, learning how to use it properly, with the aim of writing a real ebook about Instagram Marketing for slightly older people like me who are a bit clueless and pretty much starting from scratch.

I’ve followed a lot of gurus and learned a lot of lessons over the past couple of months. Some of my mentors have been very successful indeed, focusing entirely on Instagram and becoming total experts on the platform. Some of them (a bit younger than me) actually studied digital marketing at university before launching their career (I studied International Marketing, but sadly my degree predates the internet…)

One thing that has really struck me, is that there are quite a few different approaches to marketing on Instagram. It is quite possible now to have a digital product business that is entirely based on Instagram with no website or blog at all. Even though Instagram gives you only one external link when you have a small account like mine, there are many companies that provide shopping platforms for that one link to go to, where you can then sell your stuff (my favourite of these is called Pensight – I reviewed it here).

A popular marketing method on instagram and TikTok right now is the “Faceless method” where the marketer posts videos with music and text captions but never shows their face, and lots of them swear that this has lots of advantages. But then, on the other hand, you have a lot of Instagram experts (and experts in other disciplines too) who deliver all of their content in their own voice with face to the camera, and they seem to do very well too.

When I started looking at this it was all a bit confusing. So I bought a lot of books, took a lot of 5-day Facebook challenges and tried things out for myself, and this ebook is the result of all that.

Mum’s the Boss Guide to Instagram Marketing

I’ll freely admit, the backbone of this book started out as a book about Faceless Marketing on Instagram – which I bought with Master Resell rights from one of the Faceless gurus. But then having done some tests of my own, and followed some other wonderful people with a very faithful audience, I don’t believe that Faceless is the only way to go. So I have woven in some additional bits of advice from all of the people I follow plus things that have worked well for me.

This book is not going to tell you that everyone can make 10,000 followers or £10,000 a month income within three months. Some people do successfully achieve that, if they do nothing else but Instagram and if they have a very good strategy, and a niche that is not saturated. But the vast majority of people (including me) who buy books about Instagram will not grow that fast. The main thing is to keep posting regularly and keep engaging with others and watching your stats. As long as you are growing your followers and your engagements week on week, month on month, it doesn’t matter how fast – then what you are doing is working.

This book is also not going to solve the Faceless or Not conundrum. I’ve decided to do a bit of both and that works for me. I understand the reasoning why some people would want to be faceless and if you do, then I will show you how to do it well. If you like to show your face then you can do that too, and yet still chuck in a few fancy faceless bits now and again just because you can.
