What is frugal living and how can it benefit families?
As a busy working mum, life often feels like a balancing act between managing work, family, and finances. One of the ways I ensure our family thrives without unnecessary stress is through frugality. Embracing a frugal lifestyle not only helps us save money but also brings us closer together as a family.Â
Here’s a glimpse into why I am frugal and how it benefits our lives.
Enjoying Free Things in Life with Your Family
One of the most rewarding aspects of frugality is learning to appreciate the simple, free things in life. Instead of expensive outings, we spend our weekends exploring local parks, walking and visiting free museums. These activities not only save money but also provide quality time together. Packed lunches and our own drinks accompany these outings, making them even more budget-friendly.
By focusing on free activities, we teach our children the value of experiences over material possessions. It’s amazing how much joy we can find in a family picnic or a day spent flying kites.
These moments are priceless and help us create lasting memories without spending a fortune.

Growing Herbs and Salads at Home to Save Money
Another frugal habit we’ve adopted is growing our own herbs and salads at home. It’s surprisingly simple to start a small garden, even with limited space. A few pots on the windowsill or a small patch in the backyard can yield fresh, organic produce year-round.
Growing our own herbs and salads not only cuts down on grocery bills but also ensures we’re eating healthy, chemical-free food. The kids love getting involved in planting and harvesting, making it a fun family activity. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of eating something you’ve grown yourself.

Using Olio and Looking for Yellow Stickers
Food waste is a significant issue, and apps like Olio help combat this problem while also saving money. Olio connects neighbours and local businesses to share surplus food, reducing waste and fostering a sense of community. We regularly check Olio for free food items that we can use, which helps stretch our grocery budget further.
Another money-saving strategy is looking for yellow sticker deals in supermarkets. These marked-down items are perfectly good but close to their sell-by date. By planning meals around these discounted items, we save a considerable amount on our weekly shop. It’s a simple yet effective way to be frugal and reduce waste.
How much can you save with a frugal lifestyle?
You could potentially save hundreds of pounds a year living a frugal lifestyle.
- Enjoying the Simple Life of Days Out at Free Museums, Parks etc. – We love the simple life, and part of that is enjoying cost-free days out.Â
- Choosing budget friendly activities – Free museums, parks, and local events offer endless entertainment options. Whether it’s a day at the beach with homemade snacks or a visit to a historical site, these activities enrich our lives without draining our bank account.
- Taking packed lunches and our own drinks – this is a habit that has saved us hundreds of pounds. It’s healthier and more cost-effective than buying food on the go. Plus, it’s another opportunity to involve the kids in preparing and packing meals, teaching them valuable life skills.
- Shopping Second-Hand Clothing to Help Purse and the Planet – Fast fashion is not only expensive but also harmful to the environment. That’s why we’ve embraced shopping for second-hand clothing. Thrift stores, online marketplaces, and clothing swaps with friends provide us with stylish, affordable options. Shopping second-hand helps us save money while also reducing our environmental footprint. It’s a win-win situation that aligns with our values of sustainability and financial prudence. Plus, it’s fun to hunt for unique, vintage pieces that add character to our wardrobes.

Knowing Why I Want to Be Frugal
Understanding the reasons behind my frugality keeps me motivated. For our family, being frugal means more than just saving money; it’s about building a better future. We’re saving for a family holiday, where we can create unforgettable memories together. We’re also investing in our garden, turning it into a haven for relaxation and homegrown produce.
These goals give our frugal efforts purpose. Every penny saved brings us closer to achieving them, making the sacrifices worthwhile.Â
What are some frugal living tips for raising a family?
Frugality as a busy working mum is not just about pinching pennies; it’s about creating a fulfilling, sustainable lifestyle for my family. By enjoying free activities, growing our own food, using Olio, shopping second-hand, and tracking our progress, we save money and enrich our lives. Embracing frugality helps us focus on what truly matters: spending quality time together and building a bright future.
Using a Tracker or Writing Down Frugal Activities
To stay on top of our frugal activities, I use a simple tracker like the one below. This can be a notebook or a digital app where I record all the ways we save money each week. From growing herbs to scoring yellow sticker deals, tracking our progress keeps us motivated and accountable.
Writing down frugal activities also helps us see the bigger picture. It’s rewarding to look back and see how much we’ve saved and how these small changes add up over time. It’s a tangible reminder that our efforts are paying off and bringing us closer to our goals.
