Have you ever found yourself staring at the school calendar, knowing the long summer holidays are approaching — and wondering how on earth you’re going to juggle it all? Do you dream of maybe starting a home-based business instead of your regular job?
If you’re a mum balancing a traditional job and family life, this time of year can feel especially overwhelming. And you might find yourself wondering: Is there another way? Could I create a way of working that fits around my family instead of against it?
I know this feeling very well, and I also know you’re not alone. For many mums, the challenges of summer can spark a powerful desire for change. You might be thinking about leaving your job to start your own business, but taking the leap can feel daunting and risky, especially when life already feels so busy. But yes, it is possible to find a way if you are determined to change your lifestyle.
The good news is that you don’t have to make drastic decisions straight away. This summer is the perfect time to gently evaluate your options, and maybe even test out a home-based business idea. Plan your move at your own pace, without pressure, and without needing to hand in your notice just yet.
Let’s explore how you can do this.
Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Explore Change
While the summer holidays can be chaotic, they also offer a unique window for reflection. Your usual routines are disrupted, and the contrast often brings clarity about what is and isn’t working in your life.
I took a three-year sabbatical from my high-powered job when I had my children, as I had joined my husband on his overseas placement. When we returned, I knew I couldn’t bear to go back to the working hours and stress levels I’d had before. Three years as a stay-at–home mum had shown me that I wanted to be present for every moment and actively involved in my children’s development. It took me a while to find my perfect business ideas, but I got there eventually. If you want to read my entire story, you will find it in six chapters starting here.
When you’re juggling work, childcare, and trying to enjoy some family time, it can really hit home how inflexible many traditional jobs are. And that’s often the spark that gets mums thinking about a different path.
At the same time, summer can offer small pockets of time, whether it’s a quiet morning, a rainy afternoon, or a quiet evening after the kids are in bed, where you can start exploring new possibilities.
You might also find that opportunities arise naturally over the summer. Conversations with other parents, community events, or local activities can inspire new ideas or open up potential avenues to explore.

You Don’t Have to Quit Yet – Plan and Test first
It’s very tempting, in moments of frustration, to want to throw in the towel completely. But building a business that works for you and your family takes time — and testing the waters first is one of the smartest things you can do.
Testing gives you the chance to:
- Discover what you actually enjoy doing
- Find out whether there’s a market for your idea
- Gain confidence and experience gradually
- Build up some income streams without financial pressure
- Prepare practically and emotionally for any bigger changes down the line
Think of this summer as your experimentation phase — a safe space to try things out and see what lights you up.

Simple Ways to Test Out a Home-Based Business
So, how can you start testing out a business idea when life already feels so full? Here are a few flexible ways to begin, without needing a huge investment of time or money.
Try a Side Hustle
One of the easiest ways to dip your toe in is by starting a small side hustle. This could be offering a local service — such as childminding, tutoring, or pet sitting — or selling handmade items at local markets or online platforms like Etsy.
Many mums find that running a small side hustle not only brings in some extra income, but also helps build confidence in managing a business.

Explore Freelance or VA Work
If you have professional skills in areas like admin, marketing, design, writing, or customer service, you could offer freelance services to other small businesses.
This kind of work is very flexible and often remote-friendly. Platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, or local Facebook groups can help you connect with potential clients. And if you enjoy this type of work, it can form the foundation of a sustainable home business.
Start a Blog or Content Platform
If you enjoy writing, sharing ideas, or teaching, starting a blog or an Instagram account can be a fantastic way to build an audience and explore business ideas.
Blogging can lead to opportunities such as affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, selling digital products, or offering online courses — all of which can grow gradually as your audience builds.
Create and Sell Digital Products
Digital products — such as planners, templates, printables, eBooks, or mini-courses — are a brilliant business option for mums. Once created, they can be sold again and again with minimal ongoing work.
This summer, you could experiment by creating a simple digital product around a hobby, skill, or topic you’re passionate about, and testing whether there’s interest via your blog, Instagram, or Pinterest. Or, if you are not confident creating a product, you could resell digital products that other people have made. Take a look at a few examples in the Mum’s the boss shop –
How to Validate Your Home-Based Business Idea This Summer
Testing is one thing — but how do you know if your idea has real potential? Here are some simple ways to validate it:
Talk to Other Mums
Conversations in real life or online can reveal a lot about what other mums are struggling with, and what they’d pay for. Listen carefully and note down any common needs or frustrations.
Join Facebook Groups
Search for groups in your niche (for example: “UK Mums in Business,” “Mum Bloggers UK,” “Mums Who Side Hustle”) and observe what people are asking about. This will give you insight into what people want and are willing to buy.
Run a Small Experiment
Offer a simple version of your product or service for free or at a low cost to test demand. Pay attention to feedback, what people are excited about, and any questions they ask.

Research Similar Businesses
Look at other successful businesses in your niche — how are they marketing themselves? What’s working for them? Use this as inspiration, not competition. What are other mums in your friend groups doing?
Building a Plan for September
If you use the summer well, you can start September with a clear direction and some exciting momentum. Here’s what you can aim to have in place:
✅ A shortlist of business ideas you feel excited about
✅ A clearer sense of what your target audience needs
✅ Some initial content or products created
✅ The beginnings of an audience (even a small one on Instagram, Pinterest, or an email list)
✅ A plan for your next steps once the children are back at school
Even small steps now will set you up for success when you have more time and headspace in September.
