To help get you started, we have put together a guide on six quick and easy ways to upgrade your home. Keep on reading to discover some simple ways that you can make your home feel different on a lower budget.

Use mirrors to make small spaces look bigger

Mirrors are one of the simplest ways to change the look and feel of a room. By buying a mirror and hanging it in a small space, it quickly makes the space look and feel bigger and makes the room brighter (as the mirror reflects the light). Mirrors are fairly affordable and come in all shapes and sizes, making it easy to find one that fits in the most awkward of spaces. What’s best is to look online at shops like Vincent and Barn and get some inspiration from the different mirrors they offer – you may find a nice one on sale!

Play around with lighting to change the mood

Lighting can play a huge role in how a room feels. Too bright and it can feel clinical, too dim and the space can feel dark and gloomy. If you haven’t already done so, consider investing in some smart bulbs as these are cheaper to run and give you more flexibility in the colours you can use. Alongside using smart bulbs, try and buy a few lamps of different sizes; this way, you don’t have to rely solely on the main ceiling light. Having a standing lamp in the living room can add a nice touch alongside a standard lamp on your console table.

Use plants to add colour

A nice, affordable way to make a difference to your home is to use plants to add colour and fill any empty spaces. Plants are great at adding colour as they can come in a variety of colours, and you can also buy decorative pots for them to complement yo9ur colour scheme. They are also great at filling empty spaces, which can make a room look fairly empty. Try to buy plants which are easy to look after, as you don’t want to spend too much time having to nurture them and consider having different types of plants, like floor ones, with ones which you can drape from a shelf. The best thing to do is pop down to your local garden centre and see what plants they have available.

Purchase a rug to add a new dynamic to your living room

If you haven’t got any rugs at home, this is a quick win that you won’t regret doing. Order a rug for your living room and any rooms in which you think one would work well. Rugs are useful for adding colour to a room (like plants), and they can help make a room look bigger. They also help make a room look welcoming and more cohesive by defining different areas of the space. Depending on your taste, you can buy a rug which is plain, patterned or textured.

Buy ornaments to decorate each room

Ornaments are an easy and budget-friendly way to bring personality into your home. Whether it’s a vase with flowers in it, an item from your recent travels (such as a cruise ship ornament), a picture in a frame or a small sculpture, there are small touches which can make a difference, and bring in some of your personality to your space. If you pop down your local high street, you won’t have to wander far to find things which you can use to decorate your home. Candles are often used to decorate a room, and they are very affordable.

Refresh your walls

When was the last time you got a paintbrush and paint and went over your walls? A lot of people tend to leave their walls for as long as possible, because painting can make the property smell. This is fine, but over time, your walls can start to look tired and old, making your home feel unloved. A quick lick of paint and you can instantly freshen it, making it look good as new. Painting isn’t expensive, and when you start thinking about it, you could change the colour altogether, to put a completely new feel together. If you are after some inspiration, Pinterest or Instagram is a great place to look to see what other people have done to their walls when updating them. You could (but it’s a little more expensive) move away from painting your walls and put some wallpaper up instead, or you could have a feature wall (wallpaper on one wall, the rest painted).

The good thing is that there are so many quick and easy ways to upgrade your home. The above is just a touch on the myriad of options. Alongside upgrading the inside (which a lot of people prioritise, don’t forget about any exterior spots that you have, like a garden or a balcony.

What quick and easy ways would you recommend to someone trying to upgrade their home? Which of the above suggestions do you think is easiest and have you done yourself?
