Do you ever feel uncomfortable at work? If so, you are definitely not alone.

Whether it’s a feeling that you don’t look your best, a feeling that you don’t belong shomehow, or that you are not good enough at what you are doing.

Within the workplace, whether you are working from home or working in the city, knowing how to look and feel good is important. Stepping out with confidence can have a ripple effect on how others will see you and most importantly, it will raise your mood too.

Looking and feeling good is great for all work environments

Why is it important to look and feel good in the workplace? Well, first and foremost, feeling good can be a great mood booster for productivity in the workplace.

It’s sad to think that according to The Body Shop, 60% of people wish they had more respect for themselves. This percentage is something that is saddening for anyone because having self-respect and valuing oneself are intrinsic to feeling content with your job and lifestyle

Taking steps to look and feel good in the work environment can help with mental well-being. A growing concern is that with social media being so prevalent in society’s lives, it’s easy enough to feel worthless and compare yourself unfavourably to others.

However, that can all change with a few changes in attitude and the actions taken to get there. Here are several ways to give yourself a boost.

1: Create a schedule within the working day

One thing that contributes to stress in the workplace is not having enough structure to the working day. If you can impose a basic structure, then you will probably be more productive and this will help to ease your stress levels.

Finding a way to organise your time that makes sense to you and allows you to feel more in control will definitely help. I recommend the book Getting Things Done as a great place to start with tis.

2: Invest in work clothing.

When it comes to looking and feeling good in the workplace, invest in clothes that make you feel good. You need to match the style of your workplace, but you should aim to have clothing that you feel comfortable in and which suits your style. It’s also a good idea to separate work clothes from relaxation clothes even if you work from home. Changing out of your work clothes is a great ritual to signify the end of the working day.

Clothes and uniforms within the workplace can still be stylish, even in a healthcare environment for example. Don’t believe us? Check out these cute jogger scrubs from Uniform Advantage. Being able to provide a whole wardrobe of clothing for work can help get focused and in the mindset of being at work.

3: Look after your skin, hair, and nails.

When it comes to your physical appearance, taking care of yourself can help you feel better not only on the outside but on the inside too. That’s why it’s good to look after your body in every sense of the word.

Getting a good night’s sleep and taking the time to enjoy breakfast is something that can really help get a better perspective when at work. Looking after your skin, hair and nails will also help you feel a lot more put together and confident within the workplace.

It’s the small details and attention that you pay to yourself, that can make a real difference to your attitude. There are plenty of supplements that can be taken in order to improve these areas of the body, so invest in health where possible.

4: Make your working space as comfortable as possible.

Think about your working space and how to make it more comfortable. As an employee of a company, HR is supposed to ensure your working space is ergonomic.  From getting the right type of chair to having a computer monitor and wrist supports in place, you need to be sitting comfortably if you need to be there for a long time each day.

If you work from home or run your own business, it’s up to you but you can still invest in ergonomic desk solutions. If you are in any doubt about how good your home set up is you can get a desk test

It’s nice too to invest some time and effort into decorating your surroundings nicely to lift your mood. Some nice photographs or wall mountings and maybe a potted plant or two – these things can all make you smile.

5: Recognise imposter syndrome

Imposter syndrome affects us all and can often pop up within the workplace. It’s natural to feel as though some things are going so well, that something is bound to happen that will ruin your progress.

For many, imposter syndrome can really damage the efforts that a person makes in the workplace. Self-sabotage isn’t needed when it comes to looking and feeling good in the workplace.

Imposter syndrome can have a mental impact on the individual and overcoming it can take time. Whenever it rears its ugly head, be sure to bat it down as quickly as it comes up. Recognise all the good that’s being done and where this imposter syndrome might be coming from.

Sometimes it’s triggered by past mistakes being made or certain individuals putting a person down.

6: Celebrate all the wins – however minor.

No job is totally smooth and some things ae always going to be stressful, messy and difficult. But on the other hand thenre are usually good things in every day, even if they are small things.

If you get into the habit of looking for the good things and celebrating them no matter how small they are, then you will find that you develop a more optimistic outlook in general. The more good things you look out for the more you will find.

And where there is a big win , make sure that everyone knows about it and

7: Remember to take breaks in and outside the workplace.

No one can operate constantly on 100% energy. There needs to be downtime for even those who have the most demanding jobs. If regular breaks aren’t taken, chances are, the person is going to break down and burn out.

All businesses should be encouraging their staff to take regular breaks but unfortunately, that doesn’t happen, so it’s up to employees to encourage it themselves. Try to take a lunch break for an hour and take regular 10-minute breaks over the course of the day where possible.

When it comes to taking time off for holidays, ensure that all of the days off are allocated and spaced out mainly throughout the year. This is important because it helps to have some time off every now and then. Again, too much work and not enough play makes a person very down unproductive.

8: Say daily affirmations in the mirror.

Finally, when it comes to starting the day in a positive manner, take a moment to look into the mirror every morning. Say an affirmation that is going to boost the mood and set the day off in the best way possible. A few examples of these affirmations could be:

  • I am worthy.
  • Today I’m going to have a good day.
  • This week I’m going to take my time.
  • I deserve to get respect from my peers.

All these affirmations are great for helping stay positive and keep that positivity throughout the working week.

Everyone deserves to look and feel good

Whether it’s in the workplace or in general, everyone has the right to look and feel good. Hopefully, with these tips, it can deliver a great boost to how a person feels or looks when it comes to the workplace. A few changes in mindset can be all that’s needed to feel good again.
