I started this blog in 2010 when my children had just started primary school, but now they are both at university, and I’m not combining full time parenting with business any more.
My original idea and mission was to give support and advice about starting a small business and digital marketing to mums who want to work from home and be with their children, and this is still very much at the core of this blog. But as my family has grown and I’ve looked at which of my posts are doing best, I realise that that is not all you want to read about.
Mum’s the Boss is for the parents in the middle of it all.
Mum certainly is the Boss in many homes – we are in charge of so much and the buck stops with us. We have children or
But many of us have partners in demanding jobs who can’t help us much because they are working too hard, or maybe we are single parents. It just never seems to stop!
Throw in a pandemic, an increasing number of children with special needs or medical conditions, and a global financial crisis, and it seems that there are more and more things that the average mum needs to keep at the top of her priority list just to stay afloat.
Does this resonate with you? It’s certainly a story that I have seen in many versions on my friends’ social media accounts. I was lucky enough to be able to take time out from my business to deal with some of my more serious family stuff, but I know people who are going through worse than I did, while still working and parenting and all the rest of it.
I salute you all, strong, wonderful women, but I also want to help you to find some happiness and a little bit of space just for you. This workbook helps you to sift through your thoughts and dreams and make a plan for a better life
Taking Time for Yourself
I have been taking care of myself much more recently, nurturing myself with better food, better sleep and relaxation in several forms. Managing my work time better, allows me to take some time just for me now, and I have found several outlets which have helped me to rediscover my happy, all of which I will be sharing with you on this blog.
It’s still a struggle, the guilt is still there and I
So in amongst the small business advice, Mum’s the Boss is going to document my search for health, wealth, happiness and my essential self, and I will be sharing all of the hints and tips that I find to help me on my way.
I have taken on a couple of resident writers, and will publish guest blogs from time to time, to cover parenting, business and other topics from a different angle, now that I have stepped back a bit from parenting myself. These will be the main topics:
- Small business tips, especially those which make your life more efficient
- Helping you to develop passive income streams (so you have some pocket money to go out and play with)
- Household budgeting and finance tracking (ably covered by resident expert Frugal Jools)
- Healthy Eating and Fitness
- Mindfulness, relaxation and self care
- Time management and productivity
- Home organisation and decluttering
I hope that some of you reading this will choose to come with me on my journey as this blog enters a new chapter.

[…] What is Mum’s the Boss all about? So here we are halfway through 2018, and this seems like a good time to take stock of Mum’s the Boss. Once in a while in the life of many blogs, it is often a good idea to sit back and focus a bit on what the blog is all about. … […]

[…] As a parent, that feeling is often magnified by having to manage everyone else’s to-do lists as well! Add in the presence of children under your feet in the holidays, or possibly the needs of parents or other family members and it almost gets too overwhelming. Trust me, I know – I’m living it too […]
Your post is so true! We have so many demands on our time it can be overwhelming. Yet we need to make time for ourselves. I’ve talked about the need for a work-life balance on my own blog. I know exactly where you’re coming from!
I’m not a Mum, Debbie, although I do feel like one at times looking after a senior citizen parent and a delightful 10 year old Cock a Tzu who now has cataract but continues splendidly in her role as Companion and Friend. Our experiences do change us as we go along and I can relate to your transformational journey. As they said in Star Wars, May The Force Be With You, now and always.
Yup, mum can mean a lot of things. We parent our parents as they get older and we definitely parent our fur babies. May the Force be with you too!
My parenting days are over, they have all fled the nest and now have hatchlings of their own. I am, however, looking forward to taking this journey with you as my health amongst other things needs an overhaul. My life has taken so many different paths and your right, it changes the person you once were. I am, due to circumstances beyond my control about to peel off another layer and become someone different yet again. I love the above blog and your words couldnt be more fitting to my life. This is gonna be a great journey, I can feel it in my water lol x
