Creating succesful blog content, day in, day out, is a lot harder than it looks. After nearly 15 years in this business it’s geting a bit easier for me, but there are still days when I don’t have a clue what i want to write about.

But in the beginning it is perfectly normal to have periods when you’re sat there, blinking at the screen, wondering what on earth to write about – or maybe you started well and full of excitement, but you have simply run out of ideas and enthusiasm for this project. It can be hard to build a blog readership up from scratch, and it can be very disheartening when you work hard on a post that you are excited about, and then nobody comes to visit it.

If this is you, then don’t worry, you’re in good company! Many bloggers feel the same way, and most bloggers go through periods where they can’t seem to find exactly what their viewers are looking for.

In this guide, I’m going to show you how to consistently create fresh, engaging blog content that actually works for you and your business – without feeling like you’re dragging yourself through treacle.

The Honest Truth About Blogging for Business

I chat to mums in business all the time who are either teetering on the edge of starting a blog but feel completely stuck for ideas, or who launched one in a flurry of excitement… and now it’s gathering dust and they are getting fed up with the endless work for very little return. Sound familiar?

Often, the first hurdle crops up because everywhere you look, someone is shouting about how “you must have a blog!”

Maybe you’ve seen competitors nailing it, or heard that it’s brilliant for SEO for your business (which is true). So you think, I’d better get on the blog train too or I’ll get left behind.

But then… the doubt creeps in. You start analysing it to death. You’re juggling a million things already – family, clients, business admin, marketing, the list goes on – and the idea of committing to a blog feels like trying to carry one more thing when you’re already dropping balls left, right, and centre.

Or perhaps you did start with a bang – but now the sparkle’s worn off and your blog’s looking a bit, well, sad, and nobody comes to see it. How can you rekindle your spark?

First Things First: Ask Yourself – Why Are You Blogging?

Let’s go back to basics first: Before you even worry about producing succesful blog content, stop and ask yourself: Why am I blogging?

Because everyone else says you should” is not the right answer!

Do you really want to blog, and is a blog the right marketing solution for your specific business?

Building a strong online presence, growing your brand, becoming the go-to expert in your niche – all excellent reasons. But if blogging feels like just another miserable chore, you’ll either resist doing it or your readers will pick up on your “can’t be bothered” energy. Neither is good for business.

Blogging is a form of marketing. And whether you love marketing or secretly wish it would vanish into a black hole, it’s vital if you actually want your business to grow. So: decide to back yourself. Get behind your choice to blog and own it.

Alternatively, if you are looking at this question, and have suddenly realised that your blog is hindering you and getting in the way of you doing the business things you really need to, then stop blogging. It’s OK, no blog is better than a blog that has no energy or substance – maybe there are better ways for you to market yourself.

Planning Is Your Secret Weapon

If you have got past that first question, and you still want to blog, then you need a basic plan. You don’t need a 47-page content strategy for your blog (unless that would make you feel more comfortable). You just need something simple and realistic that you can commit to. Here’s what to map out:

  • What you’ll write about (content ideas)
  • How often you’ll post (consistency beats frequency)
  • Any keywords in your area that you want to target for SEO

Don’t set yourself up to fail by planning to blog daily if you can realistically only manage once a fortnight. Start small, get consistent, and you can always scale up later.

Where to Find Brilliant and Succesful Blog Content Ideas

If you want your blog to actually stand out, you need to mix the obvious stuff with a bit of creative thinking. Here’s how:

The Obvious (but still brilliant) Stuff

  • Your opinion on industry news – Share your take. Be informative and human, or be slightly off-centre and offer an alternative view to the norm, but steer clear of lecturing or getting on your soapbox.
  • How-to guides and tutorials – People love solutions. Think recipes, patterns, templates, step-by-step instructions, or downloadable PDFs.
  • Tips and advice on using your products/services – Help your customers get even more value from what you offer.
  • Behind-the-scenes content – Show your products in action, or people using your services. Bonus points for quirky or inspiring settings!
  • Polls and surveys – Not only are they great for engagement, but they can also generate PR-worthy insights.
  • Customer stories and testimonials – Share genuine feedback. Keep it real – no cringey infomercial vibes.
  • Videos – A quick demo, a time-lapse of your process, or a simple customer testimonial adds so much personality.

And don’t forget: if you’re also on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or LinkedIn, mix it up! No one wants to see the exact same thing plastered everywhere.

Thinking Outside the Box

Let’s get a bit more playful! Here’s a real example: I met Bisola from Kiddiesplaybus at a Mums The Boss event.

Her business? Throwing kids’ parties in a soft play bus. Brilliant, right?

Off the top of my head, here’s what she could blog about:

  • Videos of kids having the best time – Nothing sells joy like seeing it!
  • Bus-themed cake ideas – Pinterest-worthy party inspo.
  • DIY bus-themed party invites – Offer a free printable.
  • Creative party themes – Teddy bears’ tea party on the bus, anyone?
  • Top tips for stress-free party planning – Every parent will thank you.

Your business is a goldmine of content once you start looking through the eyes of your audience. What do you know that they are looking for?

How AI Can Help You Create More (Without Working More)

Here’s a little 2025 secret: you don’t have to do this all alone anymore. I wish AI had been around when I started blogging, but now that it is here , it helps me so much, while still allowing me to create each post with my own unique style and personality.

AI tools can help you brainstorm, flesh out ideas, outline posts, or even generate first drafts. They’re brilliant for those days when your brain feels fried and you just need a starting point to get the creative juices flowing again.

If you’re looking for the perfect toolkit to help you harness AI (without it sounding robotic or weird), I highly recommend checking out my Business and Blogging AI Toolkit. I use these tools all the time, and swear by them. The more you use them, the more you can train them to sound like you.

This kit is specifically designed for mums in business who want to blog smarter, not harder – you can prime these bots with your original ideas and concepts, and let them get to work to make content creation feel easy and fun again!

Blogging Without Burning Out

You don’t need to update your blog daily. Consistency matters more than quantity.

Start with a rhythm you can manage – maybe once a week or fortnightly. Better yet, batch create your content. Set aside an hour, bash out three or four posts, and schedule them. Future You will want to give Past You a high five.

Keep a running list of blog ideas (I swear by the Notes app on my phone). That way, when inspiration strikes mid-supermarket shop or during the school run, you won’t lose it.

Also, remember: blog posts don’t have to be War and Peace. A short post with a strong image and a few thoughtful sentences? Gold dust. And if you find yourself writing a novel? Split it into two posts – boom, more content without more effort.

Final Word: Blog Smarter, Not Harder

Blogging is an incredible tool – for connection, credibility, and community. But you will only produce succesful blog content if blogging is sustainable for you and something you enjoy doing. Plan ahead, keep it real, mix up your content, and most importantly – enjoy the process.

Because when you’re genuinely excited about what you’re sharing, it shines through – and that’s what keeps your readers coming back for more.
