You’re not just a mum. You’re also the manager of a household, the CEO of your own sanity, and maybe the founder of a business you built between school runs and swimming lessons.
You might be juggling emails while folding laundry, planning your content calendar between making packed lunches, or wondering if anyone else feels as overwhelmed and underpaid as you do. The answer is – yes, we all do!
Welcome. You’ve found your people. I’m Debbie, a mum of two young adults now, wondering where the time has gone. I’ve been living this remote working mumpreneur life for over twenty years. My kids are at university and I’m nearing the end of the active parenting stage, but I still remember all the steps and milestones that have got us here. I’ve been sharing my story online since 2009, and helping people with parenting tips, business tips and lots of moral support.

Where It All Began
Mums the Boss was born back when my own children were small, and I was figuring it all out. I decided not to go back to a full-time stressful career with lots of travel after the children were born, but I wanted to start a business to keep my brain active and to contribute in a small way to the family finances. I had a couple of false starts and figured out a lot of what doesn’t work, and then I found blogging, and built my own social media following 9back when social media was brand new and easy to break into). Now I help others with digital marketing and social media, while keeping this blog running alongside my other clients.
The blog has followed my life – through the toddler years, school transitions, business experiments, mindset wobbles, caring for parents and all the triumphs and disasters in between.
Over the last 16 years, it’s grown into a hub for mums in business. Not just tips and tutorials, but real talk. The behind-the-scenes truth. The things we’re all thinking but rarely say out loud.

Who This Blog Is For
If you’ve ever tried to send an invoice while someone’s asking where their PE kit is…
If you’ve skipped a client call because school rang early…
If you’ve stared at your laptop at 11pm, wondering if this business dream is even worth it…
You’re not alone. You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re building a life around your family, and that takes grit, grace and more cups of tea than you’d care to admit.
This blog is for the mums who are:
- Starting something new with zero spare time
- Figuring out how to promote their work without sharing too much or boring people
- Feeling left behind by “boss babe” culture
- Craving a way to grow their income and feel like themselves again
- Navigating parenting, productivity and pressure all at once
Whether you’re freelance, self-employed, side-hustling, or just exploring what’s at the end of your maternity leave, you’re in the right place.
Mums the Boss is here to help you build something real, without burning out.

What You’ll Find Here
Over the years, I’ve written about all sorts, some of it helpful, some of it very 2012.
But these are the main themes I keep coming back to:
1. Parenting & Mindset
Thoughts on school transitions, supporting teenagers, playdates, routines, identity shifts, and what it really feels like to be a mum in 2025. looking after the small people at thome is why we start small businesses in the first place
2. Small Business Support
Digital tools I love, honest reviews (like Pensight), productivity hacks, visibility tips, gentle marketing strategies, and ways to run a business without burning out. I love finding some of the tools that other people aren’t using yet.
3. Lifestyle for Mumpreneurs
Meal ideas, family logistics, time-saving strategies, book recommendations, reviews and giveaways, and the messy beautiful chaos of building a life that actually fits.
This is all the stuff that I needed in my business and with my children. I tried lots of things and shared the ones that work. You’ll also find the occasional vent, victory, or vulnerable share. Because business doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and motherhood sure doesn’t either.

A Quick Note on the Google Hit
If you have been here before, you might have noticed the blog feels a bit quieter than it used to. Like many creators, I was hit hard by Google’s 2024 AI updates. Traffic dropped. Engagement slowed. For a while, I considered shutting it all down.
ButI can see a lot of bloggers are in the same boat and I’ve decided to rebuild.
Smarter. Simpler. More honest. More helpful.
And when I figure out how to recover my views and engagement, sustainably, and ethically, without burning out, I’ll turn it into a course. Because I know I’m not the only one trying to find a way back.
AI will not beat me – in fact I will harness it and use it to help me grow again, managing it carefully, in order to help me create good content but without selling my soul or going full-on robot.
So if you’re still here – thank you for visiting. Please leave me a comment and say hello!
Let’s rebuild this blog and your business together.

[…] As a parent, that feeling is often magnified by having to manage everyone else’s to-do lists as well! Add in the presence of children under your feet in the holidays, or possibly the needs of parents or other family members and it almost gets too overwhelming. Trust me, I know – I’m living it too […]
Your post is so true! We have so many demands on our time it can be overwhelming. Yet we need to make time for ourselves. I’ve talked about the need for a work-life balance on my own blog. I know exactly where you’re coming from!
I’m not a Mum, Debbie, although I do feel like one at times looking after a senior citizen parent and a delightful 10 year old Cock a Tzu who now has cataract but continues splendidly in her role as Companion and Friend. Our experiences do change us as we go along and I can relate to your transformational journey. As they said in Star Wars, May The Force Be With You, now and always.
Yup, mum can mean a lot of things. We parent our parents as they get older and we definitely parent our fur babies. May the Force be with you too!
My parenting days are over, they have all fled the nest and now have hatchlings of their own. I am, however, looking forward to taking this journey with you as my health amongst other things needs an overhaul. My life has taken so many different paths and your right, it changes the person you once were. I am, due to circumstances beyond my control about to peel off another layer and become someone different yet again. I love the above blog and your words couldnt be more fitting to my life. This is gonna be a great journey, I can feel it in my water lol x
