Today, I’m taking a look at the most effective digital marketing techniques that can help you spread the word about your business, as 2024 moves on to 2025. This area moves so fast and what worked well even a couple of years ago is not necessarily the best thing now.

Most of my virtual assistance clients are mums who have one-woman businesses. They have a special skill or interest that they use to help their clients; a personal trainer, a baby sleep coach, a nutritionist, a menopause coach…. and they are very skilled at what they do. But when it comes to digital markriting – either they don’t really know how to do it, or maybe it’s just that they would rather spend their time on the thing that they love to do, and so they hire me to help.

I’ve tried a lot of digital marketing methods with a lot of business types over the years, including my own and these ones below are the ones which come back time after time, and get results. Some of these methods are totally free, while others may need a little bit of investment – but at the end of the day, it’s all about finding what works best for you and your business.

1. Content Marketing – The Cornerstone of It All

Content marketing is one of the most effective digital marketing techniques you can use, and the best part? It’s mostly free! This is all about sharing valuable, relevant content that helps people get to know you and what you offer. Think blog posts, how-to guides, and even social media posts. If you can provide helpful advice, answer questions, or just share something fun and insightful, your audience will keep coming back for more, and will be very excitd to buy form you when they need the thing that you are selling.

This is of course what I’m doing here with this blog – and it definitely works!

How to Do It:

  • Start a Blog: Write about topics related to your business or niche. Not only does this boost your website’s SEO, but it also builds trust and showcases your expertise.
  • Create Video Content: You don’t need fancy equipment. A simple video explaining something useful can go a long way – Instagram and YouTube are your friends here!
  • Infographics and Images: Visual content grabs attention. Make eye-catching infographics or simple images with key points for social media posts or blog content.

If you’re up for a little investment, platforms like Canva Pro make it easy to create polished, branded visuals. A bundle of Canva templates like these ones, which you can rebrand to suit your own business can help you get started.

2. Social Media Marketing – Free and Fun

Social media is every small business owner’s best friend! It’s free, it’s engaging, and it allows you to show your personality, which makes a massive difference. I know, some platforms can be a little overwhelming, but focus on the one where your ideal customers are hanging out.

Tips for Social Success:

  • Choose Your Platforms Wisely: If you’re targeting mums, Instagram and Facebook might be ideal; for a younger audience, maybe TikTok.
  • Be Consistent: Post regularly and interact with your audience. Show them who you are, why you love what you do, and the ways your product or service can make their lives easier or better.
  • Reels and Stories: Short, engaging content like Reels and Stories on Instagram is fantastic for reaching more people. Plus, the algorithms love it!

While social media marketing is free, you might want to boost your reach by running paid ads. Facebook and Instagram offer options that are affordable and highly targetable, allowing you to hone in on specific demographics or interests.

It’s fine if you don’t know how to do this; a qualified and expert Meta ads agency can help you with your social media strategy and advertising. It takes a lot of time to get your social media right and while you can afford a few failures to get you to your perfect social media strategy, you can’t afford the entire thing to crumble.

3. Email Marketing – Your Digital Filofax

If there’s one tool I’d say every business owner should have in their digital marketing toolbox, it’s email marketing. An email list is a goldmine because these are people who are already interested in what you offer. This is one of the most effective digital marketing techniques, especially for nurturing relationships and driving sales.

Getting Started with Email Marketing:

  • Set Up a Free Email Platform: My favourite is Mailerlite, but Mailchimp and ConvertKit all offer free plans with enough features to get started.
  • Create a Lead Magnet: Offer something valuable (like a free guide, checklist, or discount) to encourage people to sign up.
  • Segment Your List: If you’re selling different products, group your subscribers by interest. That way, you can send targeted content that feels personal.

If you’re ready to up your game, consider investing in a paid email platform as your list grows. Some advanced features can include automated sequences and detailed analytics, making it easier to track what’s working.

4. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – Attracting Organic Traffic

SEO might sound techy, but don’t be intimidated – a few simple changes can make your website more attractive to search engines, bringing in new visitors for free. This is particularly useful if you want people to find your site without constantly posting about it on social media.

Simple SEO Tips:

  • Research Keywords: Figure out what words or phrases people are searching for that are related to your business. Tools like Google’s Keyword Planner can help.
  • Optimize Your Content: Include keywords (like “effective digital marketing techniques,” hint hint!) in your titles, headers, and throughout your content naturally.
  • Use Internal Links: Link to other content on your site. For example, if you’re writing a blog about one aspect of your business, link to related blogs or product pages to keep visitors clicking around.

If you’ve got a bit of budget, hiring an SEO specialist to do a one-time audit can be worth it, especially if your business relies heavily on website traffic. however, be aware that SEO is an ongoing process – if you do hire an expert one-time, you do still need to keep tweaking and refreshing your pages regularly.

5. Influencer Marketing – Tapping into Established Audiences

While this one does require some financial investment, it can be incredibly effective if done right. Influencer marketing means collaborating with people who already have a loyal following. This technique can help you reach potential customers who already trust the person promoting you.

How to Work with Influencers:

  • Micro-Influencers Are Key: You don’t need to go after the big names! In fact, micro-influencers (people with smaller but engaged followings) often have more meaningful interactions with their audience and can be more affordable.
  • Reach Out Personally: Send a genuine message explaining why you think they’d be a good fit for your brand and what you can offer them in return (this could be free products or a fee).
  • Measure Results: Use a unique discount code or trackable link so you can see how much traffic or sales are coming directly from the influencer’s promotion.

6. Paid Advertising – Boosting Visibility Fast

Let’s be real, sometimes free methods can only get you so far. That’s where paid advertising steps in, giving your business a little extra push. You can target ads based on location, interests, or even behaviour, meaning you’re showing up in front of the exact people who would love your product or service.

Best Platforms for Paid Ads:

  • Google Ads: Great for people searching for specific solutions. If your business serves a local market, Google Ads can help you show up at the top when people in your area search for businesses like yours.
  • Facebook and Instagram Ads: These are incredibly versatile and great for small businesses. You can target by location, age, gender, interests, and so much more.
  • Pinterest Ads: If you’re selling a product that’s visually appealing or has a strong design element, Pinterest is brilliant for driving traffic and sales.

7. Affiliate Marketing – A Pay-for-Results Strategy

With affiliate marketing, you get others to promote your products for a commission. It’s a pay-for-performance strategy, meaning you only pay when someone makes a sale for you. If you’re new to affiliate marketing, consider reaching out to people who are in your niche and might have an audience interested in your product.

Setting Up an Affiliate Program:

  • Use a Platform: Affiliate software like ShareASale or even simple plugins for Shopify or WordPress can make managing affiliate relationships a breeze.
  • Offer an Attractive Commission: Think about what would motivate someone to promote your product. A percentage of each sale works well.
  • Provide Promo Materials: Make it easy for affiliates by giving them graphics, copy, and even short videos they can share.

Which of these is right for you?

There you have it – a round-up of the most effective digital marketing techniques that can work for you and your small business. Digital marketing doesn’t have to be intimidating, and it’s all about finding the right mix of free and paid options that fit your budget and goals.
